Wedding Wednesday Woes

Time is seriously ticking away to the big day and I'm totally stressing out.  I felt like I had all the time in the world to get things done until we hit that three month mark.  Ever since then, I feel like time is slipping away much too quickly.  Alex has been an angel in helping me with all my wedding endeavors.  He personally bedazzled each of our invitations.

oh cell phone....
Over the weekend, I went for a trail run with my dad at Bull Run Marina.  I don't do much trail running and to be honest, my idea of a great trail run is Burke Lake with it's gentle rolling hills.  This was not Burke Lake.  This was hiking at a running pace.  My calves and quads were burning.  We ran just shy of four miles and I was exhausted.  I will never bad mouth running on a treadmill ever again.

There was no weight loss this week.  I'm still holding steady at 176 pounds.  In an attempt to keep myself motivated in my efforts, I decided to see if there were any changes in my measurements.

June 13, 2012     August 1, 2012

39.5" bust           40.5" bust

Slow progress is still progress, right?

I'm late!

It's not surprising that I am late on this post.  Only three posts into Wedding Wednesdays and I'm late.  I have had lots going on and I've also been under the weather.  Wah-wah-wah.

This past weekend was full of parties and lots and lots of eating.  I did not exercise AT ALL and quite frankly, gave myself a free pass to eat whatever I wanted.  On Saturday, I threw a hula party for my daughter and her friends.  Clearly it was a ton of fun...

Hula Dancing is exercise, right?

There was pizza, macaroons, fruit and chocolate cake and I made sure to sample everything (several times).  Plus, that evening, Alex and I headed up to National Harbor to celebrate my 30th birthday with some of my friends.  We went to a dueling piano bar and ate bar food and indulged in some liquid calories.

I wonder why Julia never smiles normally in pics...
On Sunday, we went to the pool and went to the movies and saw Brave.  I am not afraid to admit that I had an entire box of mozzarella sticks while at the movies and did not share with anyone.  They were delicious.  It has been nearly a million years since I had mozzarella sticks and I forgot how delightful they are.

Anyway, despite the indulgences of the weekend, I am down to 182.0 lbs!  Now I just need to get over this nasty cold and start running again :)  Five pounds down!  The goal for this week is to exercise three times and hopefully break the 180 barrier.

Welcome to Wedding Wednesdays

You probably heard me say once or twice that I am getting married this year.  Even though I am trying to focus on being more active and making healthier choices in what I eat, I still know that I have a lot of weight to lose and will get smaller as time goes on.  With that in mind, I bought a wedding dress in a couple sizes smaller than I currently am....

With only 17 weeks left until the big day, I need to start getting SERIOUS!  I have no idea what that means yet but it's going to start with a workout bright and early tomorrow morning :)

Each Wednesday I will check in with my progress towards the goal.  I have the horrible habit of weighing myself every day so I will cut it down to just Wednesdays to weigh myself.  I know it's not all about the number on the scale but as of right now, it's still a good indicator of moving in the right direction.  I will also keep you up to date on my some of my measurements too.

Starting Stats
 187 lbs
41.5" bust
41" waist
45.5" hips

On your mark.  Get set.  GO!

A for Effort??

Oh, the New Year Resolution.  How quickly you are made and even more quickly forgotten.   Since we are halfway into the year, I thought it would be a great time to revisit my goals and my lack of progress on them.

My 2012 goals (as of January 2012)
  • Run, walk, and/or crawl 1000 miles (approximately 20 miles a week)
  • Walk 100 miles with Julia (approximately 2 miles a week)
  • Get married!
  • Run a half marathon under 2:22:00
  • Bring my bowling average up to 120 (haha, baby steps)
  • Prepare meatless dinners on Mondays
  • Continue to decrease body fat (down to 22%)
  • Stay positive by writing in five things I am thankful for every day
So let's take a look...For the first half of 2012, I have run 140 miles.  That leaves me with 29 weeks to run 860 miles.  It's only thirty miles a week or 4.3 miles a day :)  Well geez, if I wasn't having issues with running twenty miles a week then thirty should be cake : /  Julia and I are at ten miles for our goal of 100.  It's probably not as far as we should be but I think this goal is still manageable.

Get married?  Still in the works...130 days left to go....

haha, I love these

Half marathon under 2:22:00?  CHECK!

My bowling average sadly did not improve much and in fact, I'm not even sure what it was when the league ended.  My best guess would be somewhere near 114.  Oh well.

What is that girl doing?
Meatless Mondays can be filed away under failed goals, however, it's because I have not been successful in this goal that I am still getting married in October.  Let's face it, Alex is a strict carnivore.  There will be no revision of this goal, it will simply be tossed out.

Body fat down to 22%  Fail.  I'm pretty sure being on track for running 1000 miles in a year would have helped me achieve this goal as well.  Did I mention that I still have a wedding dress that doesn't fit?  Yep.

Writing my five things a day that I am grateful for has been semi-successful.  I will admit that it doesn't happen every day but I have certainly tried.  I do love the idea of focusing on the good in life rather than the negative.  It's tough to do but it's worth the effort.

I'm going to adjust my running goal to 500 miles for the year so I will have to run 17.3 miles a week for the rest of the year.  I'm also going to keep writing five things that I am thankful for each day.  The goal I would like to add is fitting into my wedding dress....

What goals have you accomplished so far this year?

Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k Race Report

So I ran the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k this past Saturday and had a blast.  For the first time EVER, we had four out of six members of my family running!  Of course, my trusty running partner (my dad) was there, as well as my two brothers, Jeremy and Sean.

Jeremy loves to run!
We all drove down Friday night and stayed in a hotel and that was the best idea EVER.  For the Maymont 8-miler, I drove down to Richmond that morning and I was very tired to say the least.  The weather in Richmond was pretty crapolicious; it was cold and rainy.  There were about forty thousand runners so waiting to get across the start line was the most miserable part of all.

All smiles before standing in the rain
Everyone in my group actually got to the race about 45 minutes late but there were still waves crossing the start line so we jumped in and were able to start running within fifteen minutes.  Of course, as with all large races, it was very crowded and slow going for the first quarter mile or so.  The race was down Monument Avenue and they shut down the entire road for the event so there was plenty of room for running once it cleared out a bit.  There were plenty of port o' potties along the course and plenty of water and powerade too.
So let's be honest for a moment.  I have not been running like I should have been to meet my goal of 59 minutes for this 10k.  In fact, as of the morning of that run, my revised goal was to finish the race without walking any part of it.  Well, I was successful in not walking it and it was pretty easy to keep my mind off of how much I wanted to die by listening to the bands and spectators cheering us on along the way.  That has to be my favorite part of this run.  There are so many great groups that come out to cheer on the runners and it is a really fun atmosphere.

Even though I didn't make my original goal time, I did finish the race with an overall 9:45 minute/mile.   I was kind of excited about that until I realized that I finished one second after my finish time for the Turkey Trot 10k I ran last November.  One second??  Ugh.  Oh well, I guess I can still bask in the glory of beating my dad and my two brothers :)

Have you ever missed a PR by one second?

Countdowns!

I feel like time has been flying by, deadlines fast approaching, and I have been doing nothing.

There is little more than five weeks until my next race.  It's not a long one but it's one that I have done several times and I want to PR.  My best time at the Monument Avenue 10k is 1:00:52 (9:49 mile).  My goal for this year is 59 minutes (9:29 mile).  Since gaining twelve pounds over the course of the past couple of months, this goal may be more difficult that I originally intended it to be.  OH, the challenges of being lazy and gluttonous.  It's a good thing that I have finally settled on a good pair of running shoes!  We will be spending lots of quality time over the next five weeks.

My next race is the Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon, which is a mere 14 weeks away.  I am really, really excited for this race because it will be my second half marathon and, as long as I don't die on the course, it will be no problem killing my last PR.  I have to admit, I'm really awful at sticking to a training plan.  I usually print one out, post it on the wall next to my treadmill, and proceed to ignore it.  Well, not entirely, I reference it to see what my longest run should be for the week and then I try to get that one done but that's it.  I still don't understand the speed work that they list on there...

So that's all my running countdowns for the time being.  I really want to sign up for more races but alas, the wedding planning is getting in the way and spending money is frowned upon when I'm supposed to have mucho money saved :(  Speaking of, there are only 240 days (roughly 34 weeks) until I am Mrs. Munoz!!

Also, 15 weeks until I'm the big 3-0 and 28 days until...

It may be worth the midnight screening
What are you counting down?

Fickle Shoe Love

You may recall when I got new shoes here and here.  I have fallen out of love once again and returned the last pair of shoes and bought a new pair.

I took them for a spin on the treadmill last night and they felt pretty good.  Well, two spins actually.  I ran a quick 2 miles, hopped off to do some weight training, and then ran another slower two miles (because squats make my legs angry!).  I was very happy with the way my leg felt during both runs.  I'm hoping this is a long and loving marriage for the next 300-500 miles.

I think the answer to my leg issue is to run outside more.  I went for a run with my dad over the weekend and felt really, really good!  The best part about it all was the I was too busy focusing on the not tripping over roots and rocks that I wasn't over thinking my stride/gait/whatever.  My leg never bothered me or crossed my mind once!  I tend to focus on how I am feeling and try to make too many adjustments in my stride when I am running on the treadmill...and I don't think that is a good thing.

Anyway, after my workout, Julia and I enjoyed a delicious, peach-strawberry smoothie :)  Alex had gone out for the night to a Hokie event so it was just a girls night in.  I have to admit some of my favorite moments are the ones where it's just the two of us.  What can I say?  I'm selfish and love having her all to myself (when she is behaving, happy, and quiet) ;)

Back to my usual self after I finish this smoothie!

Do you have fickle shoe love?

What's your favorite time with your kid(s)?

Technology Hates Me

Well, the weekend was an absolute fail in the way of running.  I didn't run a single mile.  I did however get some new running shoes and shirt.  Dick's is having a clearance sale so markdowns were another 25% off!  Woo!
Source
Just invert the colors
Even though I didn't run this weekend, I still got a lot of stuff done.  My house had become overrun with piles.  Piles of Christmas gifts not yet put away.  Piles of mail.  Piles of toys....piles, piles, piles.  So I cleaned, did laundry, organized stuff, and did other boring but necessary things.  I also came up with my most wanted birthday present: a maid!

Since I didn't run at all Saturday or Sunday, I thought the least I could do is try out my new running shoes before work today.  I don't own a watch or an alarm clock because I use my cellphone for all of these things.  It was mildly irritating to find that the touch screen on my phone wasn't working last night when I was attempting to set my alarm for my morning run.  Somehow I managed to set it (but it hasn't worked since) and I got up and ran a quick two miles on the treadmill.  The shoes felt pretty good but I was still overcompensating for my leg.  I didn't feel like I ever completely relaxed and loosened up.  Ugh.

What made my short run even worse was Ipod has officially broken up with me.  I can't make out anything on the screen and couldn't get it to play a song, the radio, or anything.  Good thing my treadmill is in the basement where there is no TV and I can just stare at the display on the treadmill as I run.

Can you fix my phone and Ipod?

Will you come clean my house for me?

I'm Afraid of Commitment

For days now, I have been reading on Facebook and blogs about the New Year's Resolutions of others.  There is one goal that I most definitely want to accomplish this year but it's going to be a challenge for me so I'm afraid to officially declare it.  If I don't officially commit, then I can't officially fail, right?

When I first started blogging, part of the motivation behind it was to put my goals in writing and hold myself more accountable for my actions.  So here it goes:
  • Run, walk, and/or crawl 1000 miles (approximately 20 miles a week)
  • Walk 100 miles with Julia (approximately 2 miles a week)
  • Get married!
  • Run a half marathon under 2:22:00
  • Bring my bowling average up to 120 (haha, baby steps)
  • Prepare meatless dinners on Mondays
  • Continue to decrease body fat (down to 22%)
  • Stay positive by writing in five things I am thankful for every day

Hot Mess 15k

When I woke up yesterday morning, I thought the most trying part of my day would be waking up at 4:30am to meet up with Jenny to run the Hot Chocolate 15k.

I was prepared for a chilly morning but I wasn't too worried about it since I knew I would warm up quickly once we started running. We arrived at Rosecroft Raceway around 6:15am and took a shuttle to National Harbor.  Luckily, our shuttle got us to National Harbor around 7:00am.  I was kind of glad that we had some time to relax before the race because there was some business that I had to attend to.  I should have been careful what I wished for because of "highway accidents" and course problems, the 15k was over an hour late starting.  One good thing was that there was a ton of port-o-potties and I didn't have to wait in line for a single second.  But that was the absolute best part of the race.

Once the race began, it didn't get any better.  There were twenty thousand runners and enough room to run about six across the entire race.  The first out and back portion of the run was actually on a highway that was not shut down all the way.  There were actually dump trucks right next to us.  I know they were being supportive but horns right in your ear and breathing in exhaust fumes is not my ideal running situation.

The water stops during the race left something to be desired.  There was water in gatorade cups and gatorade in water cups.  At each stop, I had to wait for a cup to be filled for me (mental note:  bring hand held water bottle to future races).    Although I really appreciated all the port-o-potties before the race, I felt that there could have been more on the course.  My longest bathroom wait was on the course, boo.  Also, since the race took so long to start, the temperature warmed up quite a bit before we actually started so when I stopped to use the restroom, I also decided to take my long sleeve shirt off (mental note:  wear long layers over short layers).

Once the out and back was done, we got to run down hill for a while.  At the bottom of the hill, we ran a loop through a construction site.  I suppose we could see a bit of the harbor but seriously?  It really felt that they were bs-ing the course and just trying to get some mileage tacked on wherever they could.   The most beautiful part of the course was possibly the most dangerous part.  We were on a small path near the harbor that was covered in crushed shells.  The path was no more than six feet across with a steep drop off to the water.  They didn't have any cones or anything near the edge.  After that lovely jaunt by the water, we ran through a corrugated tunnel.  I am weird and get motion sick by looking backwards in car so this tunnel really messed with me.  I had to look at the ground the entire time.

The end of the race was up a hill.  Again, God bless the volunteers for doing the best they could, but there just weren't enough of them to help all the runners.  I had to open a case of water to get my own water bottle and I had to wait for five people ahead of me to get a cup of gatorade.

The race was not a full 15k.  My Garmin clocked my run at 9.14 miles.  I guess I should have kept running up to the post-race party that was up the hill because I probably could have made up the last .16 miles.

Thanks for the pic, Charlie!
The fondue was good.  The hot chocolate was good.  I truly did not want the hot chocolate because I felt like it was a little warm for it but I paid $65 dollars for it so I drank every drop.  They also gave out some squares of Ghirardelli chocolate.  Compared to the other issues of this race, this one is insignificant but what the heck was up with the flavors?

What happened to good ol' milk chocolate or caramel or peanut butter?

In short, this was the worst race that I have done so far.  I loved running my first race with Jenny but we will have to sign up for another for sure!  Good news though....

I met my goal!  It could have been even better if there weren't a million people in the way!  Oh well.  I will stick to non-RAM races in the future.

What has been your worst race experience?

What is the best thing to have at a race?

Triplets?!!!

Good Evening!  We have a new addition to our house that is kind of taking over our lives...

That's right, Julia is a proud mommy to three beautiful cabbage patch dolls.  I can't remember ever giving my dolls weird, nonsensical names but apparently that's what five year olds do.  Precious pa-pa, cheerleader, and Yankee Frankie never leave her side.  These have been one of my favorite gifts to give her although it involves me pretending to burp them, rock them to sleep and playing peek-a-boo.  One of the great things about being a mommy is getting to stroll down memory lane with your child, even if it means endangering the possibility of wanting to have more children in the future ;)

I'm pretty excited to make some baby blankets and reusable diapers for her dolls.  Yes, those will be the lame Christmas presents that I make for her.  Who knows though, maybe one day she will be talking to Delilah on the radio about the amazing time her crazy mother would take to make blankets with coordinating diapers for her dolls.  A girl can dream, can't she?

Anyway, let's talk about chocolate.  It's three days until the Hot Chocolate 15k :)  I'm really excited for the run this Saturday.  As of right now, the weather should be 48 degrees and partly cloudy, which is perfect for a race!   I am going for a five mile run tomorrow and then another run on Thursday.  I will be resting Friday and hopefully finishing the 15k in under 1:42:31 on Saturday :)

Did you have Cabbage Patch dolls?

If you pay to run a race, do you ever just run for fun?  Or do you always have a goal?

Hot BAM

I did it!  I finally did it!  I actually went to HOT YOGA.  It only took me a few months but I have now attended class one of four that I purchased through Groupon.  I have three classes left and they expire on December 6th so it looks like I will be doing a lot of hot yoga in the future!  At first, I didn't think the room was that hot but the heat seemed to build over time so by the end of class it was almost unbearable.  The absolute best part of the class was the chilled, lavendar-scented washcloth they handed out at the end of the class.  It was the best feeling in the entire world.  Although I enjoyed the class and only found some of the poses to be challenging, it begins my list of things you shouldn't do before a race.

Things NOT to do before a race:
  1. Try a new fitness class the day before (Hot Yoga will help you find muscles you didn't know you had)
  2. Go out for dancing and drinks the night before (Magner's is full of carbs, right?)
  3. Dance like a crazy person for three hours (droppin' it low is a great pre-race stretch)
  4. Go to bed at 2:30am
  5. Have a pre-race breakfast of a cup of coffee and an expired Power Bar gel
  6. Arrive to race approximately two minutes before start time, use the port-o-potty (because it's a non-negotiable) and run directly from the potty onto the course because the race has already started
Needless to say, this race was not my most shining moment.  The cherry on top of my poor decisions prior to the race was the race course itself.  Holy Hills.  My quads have never been so sad :(  At about halfway through the 10k, my legs felt like they were made of lead and I was contemplating just telling my dad to leave me for dead and walking the rest of the way.  He refused and continuously told me that he was just out to have fun.  I'm not sure what "fun" he was having because I was not experiencing the same.

While running this race, I got a side cramp.  It was very similar to the cramp that I got while wearing the heart rate monitor last week except for the fact that I wasn't wearing the heart rate monitor.  I stopped to walk for a minute and then began running again.  I tried to really focus on my breathing and it ended up going away after a while.  I'm really confused as to what that is all about.  I used to get cramps all the time when I was younger but have been totally fine until recently. Any ideas?

Here's the good news:  I finished!

Not only did I finish but I was third in my age division!  This truly speaks for the size of the race, haha!  I was third out of four girls in the twenty-somethings age group.  My overall time was 60:36 3/4.  Like I said, I was running from the POP onto the course so the Garmin actually had me completing it at 59:13 (-1:14 from official).  My goal for this race was 1:08:21 and I beat it!  This is also a 10K PR (personal record) for me.  Woo!

I'm so thankful for goals.  It's very exciting to accomplish them :)  I'm also very thankful for my dad because I would have wimped out and run much slower if I was running by myself.  I'm also thankful for those people that didn't sign up for the Turkey Trot, which enabled me to come in third place in my age division!  I'm also thankful for giveaways!

What mistakes have you made before a race?

Operation BAM: Day one

Thank you, Kara, for giving me a name for the goals I have for this week :)  I loved your comment yesterday

I do want to be a badass mommy!  I gave it my best effort this morning.  I ran three miles in 29:53, which is just under 10min/mile overall.  I actually walked the first couple minutes and then ran very slowly for the first quarter mile and then bumped it up to 6.5 miles/hour (9:13 min/mile).  I should have run a longer distance but unfortunately, I snoozed a few too many times and then had to get my running clothes together.  Tonight I will be getting my running gear together BEFORE bedtime.  Oh, by the way, I fell asleep before ten o'clock last night and got into bed by 10:20pm.  I missed some key dances on DWTS but I feel great today!

Let's get onto to some more feel good stuff ---Things I am thankful for!

  • Running Ricig's giveaway of a noodle hugger
  • Febreeze!  (I must saturate my back seat when I get home)
  • Concealer (hello, under eye bags)
I'm pretty excited for teleworking tomorrow because I am going to run outside on my lunch break and it is going to be infinitely better than running on a treadmill.

Are you a BAM?

What are you thankful for?

Reason VS Excuse

Good Afternoon :)  I just finished reading on another site about busy mothers making it a priority to workout and the difference between a reason for missing a workout and an excuse.  This weekend I was full of excuses.  I'm not surprised by this but it's definitely a reality check for me.  The only legitimate reason for not doing my run on Sunday afternoon was my daughter threw up all over the backseat of my car after an afternoon of picnicking and tire swinging.  It was pretty imperative that I steam clean the car immediately.  I am seriously considering selling my car due to the remaining throw up smell, however, I don't think that would be a selling point for others.

It's all fun and games until someone throws up
a gallon of Hawaiian punch in the back of mommy's car

My general excuses for not getting in my workout has been "I'm tired."  What has happened to my 4:30am workouts?  I used to enjoy them and the quietness of the house at that time of the morning and felt hugely accomplished by breaking a good sweat before six.  Apparently it takes approximately 66 days to create a new habit so if I get up at 4:30am for the next 66 days then I should be golden.  66 days?!  Oh my.

Here's a quick list of things I am planning for this week:

1. Ten o'clock bedtime (I'm so thankful that I have a wonderful fianceé who will support me in this)
2. Four-thirty morning workouts (thank goodness for my treadmill!)
3. Run the Turkey Trot in under 1:08:21 :)  (I'm thankful for my running partner who completed the Richmond marathon this past weekend at under a 9 minute mile over all!  Way to go, Dad!)

I think all of these are completely attainable if I am willing to put out the effort.  Let's do it!

What are your goals for the week?

I should spank you!

Yeah, that's what she said!  Really!

Patrice was in a bit of shock at my measurements today.  She literally said she should spank me.  On more than one occasion, I have been disappointed with my progress and Patrice and I have talked about not being so focused on the scale.  I must have given her the wrong impression about my progress and she was borderline mad when she saw the progress I made.

There was only time enough to take my body circumference and body fat measurements.  We are planning on meeting on Saturday for the other metrics.  Let's get down to the interesting stuff:

I have lost a total of 28.8 pounds and 19.625" in under five months.  It's not Biggest Loser style but I also don't have twelve hours a day to devote to working out so I will take it!  The best part of it all was the body fat percentage....dun dun dun dun.....I started at 36.9% and am now 27.1% !!!  I have now moved from "very poor" to "poor."  Woo!  In all seriousness, my goal was 32% and I killed it.

The three things that I am thankful for today?  Patrice, goals, and killing goals.

Tell me about a goal that you killed :)

Refocused

Good Saturday morning!  I hope everyone is enjoying this amazing weather :)  My morning got off to a wonderful start with some delicious veggie sausage and scrambled eggs with onions, peppers and topped with chipotle goat cheese.

Paper plates are a busy mom's best friend
After breakfast, I went to the gym and had an amazing workout with Patrice.  She attacked my legs pretty hard.  The last set I did on the leg press was 240lbs and of course, that was followed but four-step lunges with 15lb weights in each hand.  We shall see if I can walk tomorrow!

My mommy can lift more than your mommy ;)
Originally, I had a 7-mile run scheduled for today and 60-minutes of cross-training tomorrow but I am going to put off the run until tomorrow.  I'm going to try to catch up with the Lake Ridge Runners, which is always a lot of fun.

So, I have been getting down about myself and my progress and I think that I have lost sight of the purpose of this blog and my real goal.  I want to be a better role model for my daughter and I want to show her how to be fit, strong, and happy.  I don't want to constantly worry about being a certain weight or dress size because that's not a healthy way to live.  I need to refocus on the right decisions that I am making, instead of beating myself up over the poor choices.

Remember, positive affirmations?
I also think that I have  been focusing on my running more than I should be too.  Don't get me wrong, I love running and what it does for me mentally and physically.  It was just devastating when I had to stop running last year and then gained 35lbs.  Now, I am trying to cross-train more and discover more ways of being fit rather than just running.  This also reminds me of the goals that I set for myself when I began working out with Patrice.  I only have three sessions left with her!  It's probably a good idea to do a test-run of these to see how I am progressing before the second assessment.

How do you refocus on your goals?

A Moment of Reflection

As the gloomy days of Fall are settling in, I am reminded of what happened last year around this time.  I was training for the Disney Wine and Dine half marathon and my right calf started hurting.  I was pushing through it for a while but the pain just got worse.  I still don't know what was going on but I was definitely in a lot of pain.  So I went to physical therapy and an orthopedic surgeon and no one could tell me what the issue was or how to fix it.  So I decided to rest.  I rested for about six months.  Not only was I resting but I was also feeding my boredom and SAD.  Not  a good combo.  I gained thirty-five pounds.

I have now lost almost all thirty-five pounds (again...) and I'm starting to get nervous about the winter.  So I thought I would post a before and after picture as a reminder to myself of how far I have come.

Let me be cliche for a moment and say that knowing my weaknesses is half of the battle.  I'm excited to continue training for the 15k in December and I truly feel that I am capable of continuing on my path to better health.  I have three more pounds to lose to be back at the place I was last summer.  I plan to be there by October 8th.  It's going to be tough but I can do it!

It's my day off tomorrow so I get to run my four miles outside!  Yeah!

8-Mile

Well I did it!  Eight miles is done and over with :)  This was NOT like any other race that I have done.  First of all, it was trail race.  Second, the trail was barely big enough for your own two feet with a hill on one side and a cliff on the other.  Thirdly, where's my medal?

So if any of you run, you know that running can often "shake things loose."  Because Alex and I decided to just drive down the morning of the race, we had to get up at o'dark-thirty and get on the road.  This did not leave me much time to do my business.  Basically at mile five I had to find a port o'potty.  I'm just glad that there was one because, from what I hear, going out in the woods isn't too uncommon for trail running.  Let's just say that this plastic hut was NOT brought in for the run; it had been there a while.  There was a good amount of cleaning that had to be done before I could even think about hovering.  In fact, I probably would have been better off communing with Mother Nature.

Anyway, when we got back onto the trail about five minutes later, we got stuck behind some dainty runners.  Let me remind you, there was no space for passing.  Every uphill and downhill they would stop running.  I am talking about hands up in the air and tip-toeing down tiny hills.  UGH.  So I have a feeling my time would have been a little faster if I hadn't been trapped behind them for three miles.  I checked for my time but it looks like it didn't read my chip but I did cross over with my dad at the same time.  His time was 100 minutes.  I didn't achieve my goal but I was still pleased with my first trail run.

Since we were in Richmond, we decided to celebrate with a trip to our favorite place Black Sheep! I finished the race at about nine, so sadly they were only serving breakfast.  Never fear!  We at breakfast and still ordered a battleship to-go!  I had the most delicious breakfast.

It was called Green Eggs and Lamb.  It was an egg and spinach frittata topped with spicy lamb sausage and pesto.  Alex had some delicious gaitor and yellow grits.  My dad had the Barn and Bay Breakfast sandwich.

Ham, crab, egg and Mmmm
After lunch, Alex and I went back to Maymont House to take the tour and to scope it out as a possible wedding venue.  I really loved the stone exterior and the beautiful backdrop of trees.  Here are a few pictures:

I bet this place is breathtaking in the peak of Fall!

I hope you had a great Saturday!

My IPOD is breaking up with me

Anger does not make me run faster so it was a slow run this morning.  I do not know why but my IPOD has decided to hate me.  The screen doesn't light up anymore and the right ear bud refuses to stay in my ear.  Here's my run:  right, left, right, push ear bud in, left, right, left, push ear bud in, etc etc etc.  I was so annoyed.  If I was outside running, I would have thrown the IPOD by the wayside.  Instead, I was running on a treadmill and I couldn't bear the thought of my IPOD mocking me from the floor for the rest of my run.

I'm pretty sad about it all.  Next to my dad, my IPOD has been my greatest running partner.  We have shared many highs and lows together.  It's the end of an era :(  Maymont is going to be tough without some tunes.  My run ended up not being too bad, even though it was slow.  I completed four miles in forty-eight minutes.

The sun setting on my IPOD's life
Today I made some pretty good food choices.  I am finally feeling like my body is getting back into the normal swing of things and I love it!  First of all, I don't think I was drinking nearly enough water so water has been the most delicious thing EVER lately.  Second, I have been missing my veggies!  Most of the veggies I ate on my business trip were lettuce and tomatoes on my tacos.  I'm definitely not my brother; my body cannot handle just meat and carbs.

Mmm mashed potatoes with rolls....
Tomorrow is a rest day for me.  Apparently, I will drive down Saturday morning to do my run.  I hope I won't be too tired.  So after I finish that race, what's next?  I recently found out that my friend Jenny is doing the Hot Chocolate 15k.  I will need another race to train for...why not one with chocolate?  If I decide to do the 15k, I think I will sign up for daily mile to keep me accountable and motivated.

What are you training for?

Notes from Nogales

Good Evening!  It's been a wild week in Nogales, AZ!  I went for a business trip to meet fellow coworkers in our satellite office and to see how the land border operates.  It's the WILD west for sure!  I saw more action in the three days I was down in Nogales than I saw in two years at Dulles.

The aftermath of an attempted drug smuggling
It was truly amazing seeing the CBP officers and Border Patrol Agents doing their thing on the southwest border.  They have my full and total respect for the jobs they do every day.

Out with BP at the International Fence
The next best thing about my trip was the food.  My coworkers made fun of me the whole time for taking pictures of my food haha.  Here's some highlights:

Mexican BBQ pork on sweet bread with mild sauce and cream
Chicken Mole
Ahi Tuna with Cowboy Caviar
I was instructed as soon as I was picked up from the airport that there was not going to be any dieting while on "vacation."  I thought I was on a business trip but I decided not to argue and just eat whatever was placed before me.  One of the best meals that I had I actually did not document.  It was a Sonoran-style hot dog.  You take a hot dog, wrap it in bacon, put it in sweet Mexican bread and top it off with refried beans, chopped onions, mild sauce and Mexican cream.  Beyond delicious!

I have successfully gained five pounds but tomorrow starts a whole new week!  I look forward to getting back to my normal eats and also doing some running.  Oh yeah, my Maymont 8-mile run is this weekend!!!!!  I'm pretty excited about it.  I'm looking to complete it in under 88 minutes.  I can do it :)

What's your best vacation?
